The first official day of summer is in just a few short weeks, and with it comes pool parties, laying on the beach, and picnics in the park. And what do all of those things have in common? Summer reading! I can’t wait to spend those long, lazy days laying out by the pool with a good book.
Putting together my reading list for the summer hasn’t been easy, though! I know what I’m looking for in a summer read – a page turner that isn’t too heavy or thought provoking (don’t want to be shedding too many tears on the beach), but nothing too mindless. I think I’ve put together a good list that has a little bit of everything, and even some new ones that are coming out this year! Check them out and let me know if you’ve read any of them or if they made your list!
After You by Jojo Moyes
Since the movie version of Me Before You just hit theaters, I think this summer will be the perfect time to read the sequel. This one is about Louisa’s journey as she’s moving on from where the last book ended and how the people and feelings in her life take her down a path she never would have expected.
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
If you’ve read Eleanor and Park, you’ll know this one is by the same author. It’s a coming-of-age story about Cath, who is left behind by her twin sister and thrown into a entirely new environment in college where she feels alone and unsure if she even wants to grow up. I can’t wait to read this one; I’ve heard it’s touching and an easy read!
All Washed Up and Nowhere to Run by Rosamund Snow
A true beach read, this novel centers on Lara, who is washed up on a remote tropical island along with three shipwrecked men. Follow her as she navigates her relationships – good and bad – with the three of them as they await rescue.
The Ballroom by Anna Hope
This is kind of a different one, especially for a summer reads list, but I came across it and it sounds so interesting! It’s set in 1911 in an asylum where men and women are kept apart at all times, except for one night a week when they get to come together and dance. It doesn’t come out till the end of the summer, but I’m excited to check it out.
All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
A story about two teens – one who can’t wait to get out of town and start living her life, and one who wants to end his. They become fast friends and begin seeing the world through the other’s eyes, which is life-saving for both of them – or is it?
Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon
This one is about a girl who is allergic to everything. She never leaves her house or has any interaction with anyone other than her mom and her nurse, until one day, a boy moves in across the street, and everything changes. I think this sounds so interesting and I need to get my hands on it!
My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry by Fredrik Backman
After putting A Man Called Ove on my winter reading list and absolutely falling in love with it, I can’t wait to sit down with another of Fredrik Backman’s books. This time, it’s told from the point of view of a precocious seven-year-old girl whose best friend is her grandmother. Granny makes up fairytales to help Elsa learn about the world, and the novel itself is woven with them. It sounds like another beautiful story from this incredible author!
The Royal We by Heather Cocks
I’ve heard so much about this book, so I finally decided I will read it this summer. It’s loosely based on the romance of Prince William and Kate Middleton, but with different characters and slightly different circumstances. It sounds riveting and like a true guilty pleasure!
Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult
I haven’t read a Jodi Picoult book in a very long time, so why not pick this one up? This novel revolves around Jenna, who continues to obsess over the mystery of her mother’s death over a decade after it happened. It has mixed reviews, so I’m not sure what to think, but I love Jodi Picoult!
Let me know in the comments whether you’ve read any of these and what you thought! What’s on your summer reading list this year?
Also – if you need a swimsuit to wear to the beach while you lay out and read, head over and check out our new arrivals! They’re selling out quick!
