School has been back in session for a little over a month, now, and things have finally started to settle back into a schedule for my family. This means that my days are finally structured enough that I can sneak in a little free time – which means, reading time!

Now that I have time to take up more reading again, I’ve gotten started on my list of to-read books. If you’re in the same boat as me, I hope you’ll check out some of the ones I’m excited to open up!

Back to school reading

1. The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo
My sisters and I have all been taking turns reading this one, and we’ve all become a little obsessed with it. The book is a guide to simplifying your home and life by deciding which items you own truly bring you joy and which don’t. The author is a Japanese cleaning consultant and I can assure you – this book is life changing.

2. Rising Strong by Brené Brown
I love Brené Brown, who is one of the leading experts on vulnerability and why it’s so important in our lives. Her new book just came out in August and I’ve been dying to get my hands on it. It’s all about taking risks in order to succeed and I’ve heard from several people how amazing it is.

3. The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith
It’s taken me a few years to get around to reading this, but I’m incredibly excited to read this mystery novel that was actually written by J.K. Rowling, using a pseudonym. While it’s definitely not another Harry Potter, Galbraith/Rowling is such a talented writer that I can’t imagine this will be anything but incredible. Plus, it’s the first book in a series, so I can also look forward to reading those.

4. The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
I’ve been hearing a lot about The Glass Castle lately, but I’ve never gotten around to reading it. It’s the author’s memoir of her life growing up in a dysfunctional family and how it changed her, shaped her, and taught her. This one is high on my list for this fall when I sneak in a little reading.

5. Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer
When I heard that the movie Everest was coming out this month, it reminded me that this book has been on my list for a while. The book tells the same true story as the movie – the story of the worst disaster that Mount Everest has ever seen – and it’s his own personal account, as he was there on the fateful trip. I’m hoping to read this one soon so I can see the movie after while it’s still in theaters.

6. Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling
I loved Mindy Kaling’s first book, and I was so excited when I realized she was publishing another one this month. It’s mainly a continuation of her previous book, with a little more reflection on her “coming of age:” how she tries to belong in Hollywood, her dating experiences, and why she learned to be okay with herself.

What books are you looking forward to reading now that the kids are back in the classroom? Have you read any of these? Let me know in the comments and if you’re looking for more book recommendations, check out my Summer Reading Guide.
